DESMA Center as a Speaker in the Focus Group Discussion on Sustainable Tourism Destination Development in West Jakarta

Author: Siti Nur Hasbiyana, Programme Associate and Outreach

The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, through the Sub-Agency for Regional Development Planning (Sudin Bappeda) of West Jakarta, held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Development of West Jakarta Tourism Destinations on September 12, 2025, at the Office of the Mayor of the City Administration of West Jakarta.

The event was opened by Mr. Agus Sanyoto, Head of the Sub-Agency for Regional Development Planning of the City Administration of West Jakarta. DESMA Center, represented by Ms. Wiwik Mahdayani, Founder and Executive Director, served as a speaker and presented strategic perspectives on developing West Jakarta tourism destinations by adopting a comprehensive sustainable tourism approach. In her presentation, Ms. Mahdayani emphasized the importance of holistically integrating sustainable tourism principles into the planning and development of tourism destinations and provided strategic recommendations for their implementation.

Additionally, representatives from the DKI Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office delivered a presentation on the Policies, Plans, and Strategies for Tourism Destination Development in Jakarta, with a particular focus on West Jakarta.

This FGD is part of a series of strategic steps to position DKI Jakarta among the world’s top 50 global cities by 2029 and top 20 global cities by 2045, as listed in the Global City Index published by AT Kearney. The DKI Jakarta Government continues efforts to improve Jakarta’s ranking—previously 74th in 2014—by strengthening various aspects of global city development, including enhancing cultural experience.

To elevate cultural experience, West Jakarta is taking strategic steps in the tourism sector to offer interactive, memorable, and entertaining cultural experiences. The tourism sector is recognized for its strong economic multiplier effect, with domestic and international tourist arrivals playing a significant role in supporting local economic growth.

This FGD serves as an initial step toward developing sustainable tourism destinations in West Jakarta to support tourism development performance with the following objectives:

To review 10 West Jakarta tourism destinations to align them with sustainable tourism principles.

To identify additional potential tourism destinations in West Jakarta.

To formulate concepts and strategies for developing West Jakarta tourism destinations.

The 10 West Jakarta tourism destinations are thematic destinations based on the Decree of the Mayor of West Jakarta No. 40 of 2016 on the Designation of Ten Tourism Destinations in the City Administration of West Jakarta. Beyond these destinations, West Jakarta also holds other tourism potential, such as the Combined Green Alley Initiative in Kembangan Barat, the Kembangan Agricultural Extension Center, and the Kopti Semanan Area.

This FGD reinforces West Jakarta’s commitment to building globally competitive and sustainable tourism destinations rooted in rich local culture. The formulated recommendations will be followed up through a cross-agency action plan involving industry players and local communities. Through inclusive collaboration, sustainable management, and targeted promotion, West Jakarta aims to become a gateway for interactive, memorable, and competitive cultural experiences—supporting DKI Jakarta’s vision to be among the world’s top 50 global cities by 2029 and top 20 by 2045.
