DESMA Center and GIZ AMUSE Develop Documents Series of Guidelines on Waste Management and Sustainable Tourism in ASEAN

The ASEAN-German project “ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE)” is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat. The project supports ASEAN Member States (AMS) in improving environmental quality in cities that serve as tourism destinations in the ASEAN region. This is carried out through strengthening competencies and optimizing waste management, recycling, and sustainable tourism practices. This three-year project (2022–2025) specifically focuses on four beneficiary countries for pilot implementation, namely Cambodia (Siem Reap), Laos (Vang Vieng), Thailand, and Vietnam (Da Lat).
The GIZ AMUSE project has developed a regional digital platform that compiles and showcases data, publications, and examples of best practices in waste management at tourism destinations and sustainable tourism. The platform is designed to be beneficial, efficient, and effective for use by relevant stakeholders across ASEAN. In addition, the project also carries out capacity building and develops series of guideline documents for stakeholders on waste management and sustainable tourism in ASEAN.
As one of the implementing partners of the GIZ AMUSE project, DESMA Center plays an important role in strengthening knowledge management. Through the development of a Knowledge Management Strategy document, DESMA Center ensures that data, best practices, and lessons learned from various countries are well-documented and easily accessible via the regional digital platform. In addition, DESMA Center is also preparing the Series of Guidelines on Waste Management and Sustainable Tourism in ASEAN, which serves as a practical reference for governments, the private sector, academics, and civil society organizations in developing effective waste management policies and practices in the sustainable tourism sector across ASEAN countries.
The GIZ AMUSE project does not only focus on short-term achievements but also emphasizes the sustainability of its impact beyond the implementation period ending in End of 2025. The digital platform, guideline documents, and capacity building activities will remain as valuable knowledge resources for ASEAN countries. Going forward, the outcomes of this project are expected to be replicated in more tourism destinations across the ASEAN region, therefore supporting ASEAN vision of green, inclusive, and sustainable tourism.
