DESMA Center Presented Indonesia's Wellness Tourism Development Strategy with Ministry of Tourism

Writer: Dani Fauzi, Programme Officer

The global tourism industry continues to grow with trends that are increasingly oriented towards health and wellbeing. Wellness tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, including in Indonesia. With this huge resource, the Ministry of Tourism (Kemenpar) has set wellness tourism as part of its main strategic program “Tourism Upgrade” by 2025.

As a form of support to the development of this sector, DESMA Center together with Kemenparekraf held a discussion on March 11, 2025 at the Ministry of Tourism, Jakarta; to discuss the direction of Indonesia's wellness tourism development 2025. This discussion forum became a forum for cross-directorates in the Deputy for Industry and Investment of the Ministry of Tourism to map the specific needs of the industry and investment, actual challenges, and strategic opportunities in developing quality, competitive, and sustainable wellness tourism.

Indonesia has natural and cultural advantages that make it an ideal destination for wellness tourism. From the richness of spices and traditional medicine to ecotourism and spiritual healing, these resources can be developed to attract both domestic and foreign tourists seeking a health and wellness-based tourism experience.

To ensure that wellness tourism can develop optimally in Indonesia, synergy between various stakeholders is needed, including the government, tourism industry, MSME players, and local communities. In the discussion, several strategies and follow-ups that will be carried out jointly between DESMA Center and Kemenpar for the development of wellness tourism in Indonesia by 2025 were discussed.

With a holistic and innovation-based approach, wellness tourism can be an important pillar in the transformation of Indonesia's tourism industry. With the increasing public awareness of health and wellness, this initiative will not only support economic growth but also increase Indonesia's competitiveness as a leading wellness destination at the ASEAN and global levels.
