DESMA Center held a youth-friendly school workshop against bullying, violence and harassment on January 22 2025 at SMKS Bakti Luhur Tambolaka, Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. This workshop was attended by 38 participants who were teachers, school principals, school committee members and parents.

"Collaboration between stakeholders is very necessary to create a safe and comfortable school environment for teenagers," said Mrs. F.R. Titik Palupi, S.Pd., M.M., Principal of Bakti Luhur Vocational School.

Mrs. Pupu Purwaningsih, Misereor and KMW guided the first session by exploring participants' insights and group discussions regarding the protection and implementation of youth-friendly school programs in the Sumba tourism high school environment.

Mrs. Marlina Selvia Eflin Walu, S.Psi., MM., M.Psi., Psychologist at the West Sumba Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Service (DP5A) filled the second session. He shared knowledge about how a youth-friendly culture can be implemented in the school environment by considering local challenges. Traditional parenting patterns and verbal violence which is often not realized by teachers and parents are challenges in Sumba.

This activity is the DESMA Center's commitment to strengthening tourism human resources (HR) who are tolerant, superior and competitive to create better tourism.

Program Safe Leaning is part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba supported by MISEREOR/KZE and Kindermissionswerk (KMW); implemented by the DESMA Center. The youth-friendly school program aims to prevent bullying, violence and harassment in the school environment; so that young people can appreciate the differences between each other and create better tourism.

This program includes strengthening (1) school management capacity regarding the importance of protecting teenagers in schools which is in line with Permendikburistek Number 46 of 2023 concerning Prevention and Handling of Violence in Educational Unit Environments (PPKSP); (2) The capacity of the Violence Prevention and Handling Team (TPPK) in schools is running actively and (3) partnerships between Tourism Vocational Schools, government, non-profit institutions, communities and stakeholders.

The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
