The teachers of Tourism Vocational Schools assisted and affected by the DESMA Center in Sumba have implemented it internship activities in the tourism industry Bali for two weeks on 01-16 September 2024. This activity bridges the gap between theory and practice, and has a positive impact on teachers and students. Internship placements are tailored to the subject or teaching field, namely Front Office, Tata Boga, Housekeeping, Laundry, And Tour Planning. 

With adaptive and/or normative teacher backgrounds, industrial internship program participants in Bali are equipped with limited skills related to the Hotel and Travel industry. Previously, they only received teaching materials from books, online and offline training facilitated by the DESMA Center.

Nine teachers who took part in the industrial internship program in Bali, including Mrs. Kornelia Esyi Ledewara, a teacher at SMKN 1 Waikabubak and Mrs. Margaretha Dapa Kira, a teacher at SMKS Efata-Omba Rade, carried out an internship in Front Office department at Mercure Bali Sanur Resort and Prama Sanur Beach Bali. The skills gained include operating applications for reservations, telephone operators, and handling guest complaints.

Mr. Andreas Jemsianus A. Lalong, SMKS Bakti Luhur Tambolaka carried out an internship at Kitchen department  at the Mercure Bali Sanur Resort. The skills acquired are advanced cooking techniques, professional kitchen management, kitchen safety and security, food quality control, kitchen stock and inventory management, as well as food service and presentation standards.

Mrs. Margareta B. Kaka, teacher at SMKS Bakti Luhur Tambolaka and Maria Evarista S. Tiala, teacher at SMKN 2 Tambolaka City carried out an internship at Housekeeping department at Prama Sanur Beach Bali and Mercure Bali Sanur Resort. The skills gained are efficient room cleaning procedures, hygiene standards in hotels, linen management, inventory housekeeping, and handle visitor complaints.

Mr. Ferdinand Victor U. Deta, teacher at Tambolaka Pancasila Vocational School; Mr. Ibrahim Bait, teacher at SMKN 1 Waikabubak; and Mr. Arianto Wanda, a teacher at SMKN 2 Lamboya, carried out an internship at Tour Planning and Tour Guiding department at Happy Trails! Bali and Pacto DMC Bali. The skills gained are operating data entry systems, scouting techniques, work safety and tourist communication techniques.

Mr Oskarius Doo Bei, a teacher at SMKS Pancasila Tambolaka carried out an internship at industrial MICE at Prama Sanur Beach Bali. The skills acquired are preparing proposals and confirmation letter, preparation group summary, room management and event organization.

This industrial internship not only enriches individual teacher competencies, but also has an impact on the world of education in Sumba. After industrial internships, teachers are able to apply technology skills, time management, and effective communication in the classroom to students at tourism vocational schools who are students. 

The internship program in the Bali tourism industry is part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba which is implemented by the DESMA Center.

The TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba program is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by the DESMA Center. Strengthening the Capacity of Tourism Human Resources aims to realize "a tourism vocational school education program in Sumba to meet the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."

This program includes strengthening (1) The management capacity of tourism vocational schools in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about teaching and sustainable tourism (3) Tourism Vocational School-Tourism Industry Partnership; and (4) Students' entrepreneurial capacity in creating a sustainable tourism business.

The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
