Digital-Based Tourism Vocational School Learning Transformation Workshop

In line with technological developments, teachers are required to be able to think critically, creatively and contextually to provide teaching in the classroom.
DESMA Center held a digital-based tourism vocational school learning transformation workshop on November 23 2024 at SMKS Bakti Luhur Tambolaka, Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. It was attended by 18 participants who were school principals and teachers majoring in hospitality and culinary arts. Aims to provide skills to develop learning that prioritizes critical, creative and contextual thinking, as well as preparing students to face challenges in the tourism industry.
The resource person consisted of Mr Boyke Hutapea, Program Manager Field Office Sumba DESMA Center, who explained the importance of critical and creative thinking in learning. Teachers are invited to integrate curriculum that is relevant to sustainability issues in tourism.
The second resource person, Mrs. Agustina Setiawi, Program Officer Field Office Sumba DESMA Center explained project-based learning (Project-Based Learning). Teachers are trained to combine modern technology with local wisdom in teaching methods and utilize AI technology in designing exam questions to HOTS standards (Higher Order Thinking Skills).
Through this workshop, Tourism Vocational School teachers are expected to be able to design HOTS-based exam questions with the concept of sustainable tourism, so that they can apply the use of technology in learning and hone students' critical thinking skills.
The digital-based tourism vocational school learning transformation workshop is part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba which is implemented by the DESMA Center.

The TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba program is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by the DESMA Center. Strengthening the Capacity of Tourism Human Resources aims to realize "a tourism vocational school education program in Sumba to meet the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."
This program includes strengthening (1) The management capacity of tourism vocational schools in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about teaching and sustainable tourism (3) Tourism Vocational School-Tourism Industry Partnership; and (4) Students' entrepreneurial capacity in creating a sustainable tourism business.
The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
