Striving to build a tourism generation capable of critical thinking, the DESMA Center collaborates with the Tourism Vocational School educational institution in Sumba

 

 

DESMA Center held a Workshop on Sharpening Critical Thinking Skills to Build a Creative and Analytical Tourism Generation on October 3 2024 at SMKS Efata Omba Rade, Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. A total of 13 participants consisting of school principals and teachers at the Efata Omba Rade Tourism Vocational School, with resource person being the Program Manager of the DESMA Center Field Office for Sumba, Boyke Hutapea.

 

"Before making a decision, we need to think critically in analyzing and evaluating information to find innovative and effective solutions," said Boyke, a resource person for the activity.

 

Tourism opens up opportunities for meeting individuals from various regions and/or countries. In July 2024, foreign tourist visits in Indonesia will reach 1.31 million visits. These tourists have different characteristics. As a tourism actor, you need to be equipped with critical thinking skills in dealing with problems diverse tourist demand and minimize the potential for conflict.

 

The role of educational institutions is needed in building a tourism generation capable of critical thinking. Through teaching and learning activities (KBM), it can be inserted problem-based learning, case studies, group discussions, and writing exercises. Students' skills in critical thinking will be useful for everyday life and prepare them for internships in the tourism industry.

 

The workshop hones critical thinking skills to build a creative and analytical tourism generation is part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba Which implemented by DESMA Center.

The TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba program is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by DESMA Center. Strengthening the Capacity of Tourism Human Resources aims to realize "a tourism vocational school education program in Sumba to meet the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."

 

This program includes strengthening (1) The management capacity of tourism vocational schools in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about teaching and sustainable tourism (3) Tourism Vocational School-Tourism Industry Partnership; and (4) Students' entrepreneurial capacity in creating a sustainable tourism business.

 

The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
