Productive Teacher Internship at Sumba Tourism Vocational School in Bali for Upskilling and Reskilling

Sumba has great tourism potential, but still requires improving the quality of human resources (HR) so that they can contribute to future tourism development. SYNERGY Program (Innovative System for Upskilling & Reskilling Sumba Tourism Vocational School Teacher) is a program implemented by the DESMA Center, in the form of productive teacher internship activities at Sumba Tourism Vocational School in the tourism industry in Bali. This activity is a strategic step to increase the capacity of Tourism Vocational School teachers in terms of the quality of Tourism Vocational School (SMK) teaching in Sumba through direct understanding and experience in the tourism industry.
This activity will take place from 01-16 September 2024 in Bali. A total of 9 productive tourism vocational school teachers in Sumba participated in this activity, namely: Mr. Andreas Jemsianus A. Lalong and Mrs. Margareta B. Kaka, A.Md., SMKS Bakti Luhur Tambolaka; Mr. Ferdinand Victor U. Deta, S.Pd. and Mr. Oskarius Doo Bei, S.Fil., SMKS Pancasila Tambolaka; Maria Evarista S. Tiala, S.Pd., SMKN 2 Tambolaka City; Mrs. Margaretha D. Kira, S.Pd., SMKS Efata-Omba Rade; Mr. Ibrahim Bait, S.S. and Mrs. Kornelia Esyi Ledewara, A.Md.Par., SMKN 1 Waikabubak. Mr. Arianto Wanda, S.Pd., SMKN 2 Lamboya.
Productive teachers carry out internships at Mercure Bali Sanur Resort, Prama Sanur Beach Bali, Happy Trails! Bali and Pacto DMC Bali. Placements are adjusted to the subject or teaching field, namely Front Office, Cullinary art, Housekeeping, Laundry, and Tour Planning. Maximizing the experience gained by teachers, the DESMA Center holds evaluation sessions every week to identify challenges in the apprenticeship process and discuss solutions for increasing teacher capacity during the apprenticeship.
Through SINERGI activities, it is hoped that teachers will be able to apply more innovative teaching methods, develop a curriculum that is more relevant to the needs of the tourism industry, in order to prepare qualified and competitive Sumba Tourism Vocational School graduates; as well as supporting sustainable regional economic growth through the tourism sector.
The Innovative System for Upskilling and Reskilling Tourism Vocational School Teachers in Sumba is part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba which is implemented by the DESMA Center.

The TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba program is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by the DESMA Center. Strengthening the Capacity of Tourism Human Resources aims to realize "a tourism vocational school education program in Sumba to meet the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."
This program includes strengthening (1) Management capacity of tourism vocational schools in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about teaching and sustainable tourism (3) Tourism Vocational School-Tourism Industry Partnership; and (4) Students' entrepreneurial capacity in creating a sustainable tourism business.
The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
