Coordination Meeting on Knowledge Management Strategy on Waste Management and Sustainable Tourism in ASEAN

Tourism has an important role in contributing to the economy of ASEAN member countries. However, the rapid growth of tourism creates challenges including waste management in tourism destinations. In various tourism destinations in ASEAN member countries, the private sector and government have inadequate institutional and technical capacity regarding waste management. This topic has not been raised systematically and has not become a priority at regional level.
In fact, there are knowledge resources regarding waste management that are available and can be used, especially by ASEAN member countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. AMUSE (ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management) is an intervention by GIZ (the German Federal Government's State-Owned Enterprise for International Development) during 2022-2025 at regional, national and local levels in ASEAN countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
DESMA Center as the implementing partners for interventions with various programs related to waste management and sustainable tourism. One of the intervention programs is to develop a knowledge management strategy related to waste management and sustainable tourism (Knowledge Management Strategy on Waste Management and Sustainable Tourism).
GIZ AMUSE provides facilitation consultation meeting about the plan Knowledge Management Strategy the. The activity took place on May 2 2024 at the ASEAN Secretariat, in Jakarta. This activity was attended by representatives of the GIZ AMUSE Regional Office in Jakarta, GIZ-AMUSE Cambodia, GIZ-AMUSE Laos, GIZ-AMUSE Thailand and GIZ-AMUSE Vietnam. DESMA Center was represented by Mrs. Wiwik Mahdayani, Mr. Dicky Mardyan, and Mr. Dr. Rino Ambangtjayo.

Consultation meeting This is part of the document preparation activity Knowledge Management Strategy. This activity was carried out to equalize perception, understanding and agreement regarding important variables that need to be considered when preparing the document. Apart from that, this activity was also carried out as a preparation for "Workshop on Development of ASEAN Knowledge Platform on Waste Management in Tourism Sector” which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand on May 30 2024 involving ASEAN Member States, ASEAN Working Groups and GIZ AMUSE strategic partners.
On this occasion, the DESMA Center gave a presentation of proposals and a draft framework Knowledge Management Strategy to display data, publications and examples of best practices in managing waste from the tourism sector, as well as facilitating discussion forums for stakeholders stakeholders contribute new ideas related to waste management and sustainable tourism.
Through consultation meeting It is hoped that this will provide input, new views and strengthen understanding regarding knowledge management strategy dan knowledge management system.
