Environmental Awareness Campaign: Environmental Education for a Sustainable Future for Tourism Vocational School Students

To coincide with National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2024, DESMA Center is carrying out Environmental Awareness Campaign activities for students of SMKN 2 Tambolaka City & SMKS Pancasila Tambolaka. Located at Tambolaka City Square on February 21 2024. A total of 158 participants participated, consisting of 131 students, 12 teachers, 7 MSME representatives, 2 MISEREOR Indonesia representatives and 6 DESMA Center teams.
Participants were given awareness and assigned work areas to collect and sort waste. Waste was separated into 3 types, namely: plastic bottle waste amounting to 24,925 kg, other plastic 53,315 kg, and residue 2,220 kg.

Not only collecting and sorting waste, students are also invited to reduce the use of single-use plastic in their daily lives by using alternatives such as tumblers, food containers and tote bags.
The purpose of implementing this activity is so that all school residents at SMKN 2 Kota Tambolaka and SMKS Pancasila Tambolaka can understand the importance of using plastic wisely, namely by reducing the use of single-use plastic in the school and surrounding areas; gain knowledge and switch to using environmentally friendly products; build awareness and responsibility to protect the environment for the welfare of future generations; and creating a clean, green and sustainable school and community environment

The TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba program is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by the DESMA Center. Strengthening the Capacity of Tourism Human Resources aims to realize "a tourism vocational school education program in Sumba to meet the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."
This program includes strengthening (1) Management capacity of tourism vocational schools in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about teaching and sustainable tourism (3) Tourism Vocational School-Tourism Industry Partnership; and (4) Students' entrepreneurial capacity in creating a sustainable tourism business.
The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
