Workshop on Development of the Tourism Vocational School Industry Work Practice Program: Improving Child Safety and Protection

Vocational High Schools (SMK) have the output of preparing graduates who are ready to work in industry. To prepare students' competencies, the school has a Prakerin or Industrial Work Practice program. Students will learn to implement the knowledge gained during school by working in industry.
DESMA Center facilitated a workshop on developing industrial work practice programs for tourism vocational school students in Sumba on 19 October 2023 in the Efata Omba Rade SMKS meeting room. Aims to improve the safety and protection of children during industrial work practices (prakerin) for vocational school students. Attended by school principals and teachers from 5 assisted schools (SMKS Bakti Luhur Tambolaka, SMKS Pancasila Tambolaka, SMKN 2 Kota Tambolaka, SMKS Efata Omba Rade, SMKN 1 Waikabubak) and 3 non-assisted schools (SMKN 1 Kodi Utara, SMKS Kasimo, SMKN 2 Lamboya) with a total of 29 participants.
Speakers from DESMA Center Field Office Sumba, Mr. Boyke Hutapea and Mr. Adrianus Ubas. In the first session, the material consisted of understanding the background of the activity, objectives and expected results; as well as regulations relating to student internships, such as Minister of Education and Culture Regulation Number 50 of 2020 concerning Field Work Practices (PKL) for Students and Minister of Education and Culture Decree Number 262/M/2022 concerning Guidelines for Implementing Curriculum in the Context of Learning Recovery. In the second session, an evaluation was carried out for each school regarding the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for industrial work.
At the end of the activity, Misereor representatives emphasized the organization's focus on child protection. They support schools' efforts to develop effective SOPs to protect students from acts of violence and harassment. Misereor will also facilitate follow-up activities in early December 2023 to help schools evaluate and improve rules and SOPs related to child protection.
This activity is part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba which is implemented by the DESMA Center.

The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
