Handover of Garbage Sorting Sites as an Environmental Awareness Action for Tourism Vocational Schools in Sumba, NTT

Good waste management is an important first step in maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability. This attitude of caring for the environment needs to be applied from an early age. Supporting this, the DESMA Center distributed waste segregation sites to five tourism vocational schools in Sumba.
On Monday 05 June 2023 handover of 10 (ten) sets of waste sorting bins. Each set contains 3 (three) types of waste segregation, namely organic, non-organic and paper waste. The waste sorting site was received by each school principal, namely Tambolaka City 2 Vocational School, Tambolaka Bakti Luhur Vocational School, Tambolaka Pancasila Vocational School, Efata Vocational School and Waikabubak 1 Vocational School.
With the existence of waste segregation sites at schools, it is hoped that there will be positive changes in student behavior regarding waste management. This activity is expected to provide opportunities for students to learn about the importance of contributing to keeping the environment clean and recycling knowledge.
Through this approach, students can learn about the importance of good waste management and become agents of change who are responsible for the environment. Assisted schools can also be examples in supporting environmental action awareness in the school community and in the environment around their school.
This activity aims to increase the awareness of students and school teachers, as well as support government programs related to sustainable environmental education.

The TVET Program for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by the DESMA Center. Strengthening Tourism HR Capacity aims to realize "The tourism vocational school education program in Sumba so that it meets the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."
This program includes strengthening (1) the management capacity of tourism vocational schools that are in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about sustainable teaching and tourism (3) Tourism Industry Vocational Vocational School Partnership; and (4) the entrepreneurial capacity of students in creating sustainable tourism businesses.
The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) SMK Pancasila – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) State Vocational School 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) SMK Negeri 1 Waikabubak, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) the Office of Education & Culture of East Nusa Tenggara Province; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Tourism Office of Southwest Sumba Regency; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
