Environmental Care and Culture Awareness Campaign in Tourism Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Sumba – Bakti Luhur Tambolaka Vocational School Towards Green Schools

The DESMA Center carried out the "Care and Cultured Environment Awareness Campaign at Tourism Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Sumba" which took place at the Bakti Luhur Tambolaka Vocational School, on Friday, April 27 2023. This campaign was attended by 50 participants, taking place from 08.00 to 13.00 WITA. This activity is in the form of a campaign with the intention of real action and good movement to welcome green schools. This activity was divided into two sessions, a campaign socialization session and tree planting as well as a school discipline socialization session and discussion.
Also present dr. Kornelius Kodi Mete, Regent of Southwest Sumba (SBD) gave a speech. After the remarks, the tree planting was carried out with 14 saplings of the types of Moringa, Konji (or better known as Sakura Sumba), Flamboyan and Soursop. The saplings were obtained from the Center for Nurseries and Watershed Management in Central Sumba district.
The tree planting was represented by Dr. Kornelius Kodi Mete, Regent of Southwest Sumba; Mr. Benyamin Kaba, Secretary of the SBD Environment Service; Mrs. Anita Y. Tuka, Head of the SBD Regency Agriculture and Food Security Service; Mr. Nyoman Agus S., Head of the SBD Tourism Office); Mr. Agustinus H. Theedens, District Head of Tambolaka City; Mr. Johanis Ng. V. Kaleka, Supervisor for SMS/SMK/SLB, SBD Regency, Laura Region; Mrs. Pupu Purwaningsih, Misereor Local Coordinator for Indonesia; Mr. Boyke Hutapea, Program Manager for DESMA Center Sumba; Mr. Eduard L. Falius, ASIDEWI; Mrs. Vindy Susanty, Sinar Tambolaka Hotel; Mrs. Pande Puspita, SIMA Hotel; Mrs. Ni Nyoman Aris Suparni, SMKN 3 Denpasar; and Mr. Wayan Suyoga, Hotel Prama Sanur Beach Representative.
In the socialization and discussion sessions related to discipline, it was conveyed in 4 parts, namely: (1) rules for protecting the environment, (2) rules for efficiency in the use of water, electricity, stationery and plastic, (3) rules for toilets, (4) rules for smiling, greeting, greetings and courtesy.
Violations of these rules by all school members will be subject to educative sanctions. Sanctions given to violators do not lead to physical violence and have a psychological impact. The purpose of imposing sanctions is one of the solutions to awareness of the environment, such as cleaning toilets, picking up trash in the school environment, watering plants, bringing in new plants, planting and caring for them, and being given academic assignments about the environment.
The discussion session discussed waste, regulations and mechanisms. Stakeholders are enthusiastic about conveying ideas and ideas related to environmental issues according to their experience. The output of this discussion is to build a shared commitment to seriously pay attention to the surrounding environment and to be responsible for each individual's waste. The support provided by the Regional Government of SBD related to environmental issues, support from the Provincial Government of NTT through the Forestry Service and Education and Culture Office in the form of moringa seeds and re-arrangement of the Watukanggorok Tourism Forest Area.
Through this activity it is hoped that all school members will care more about the earth and the surrounding environment and take concrete action so that the earth we live in is maintained so that it becomes clean, beautiful, healthy and comfortable.
The Environmental Care and Culture Awareness Campaign at Tourism Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Sumba which was carried out at the Bakti Luhur Tambolaka Vocational School was part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba implemented by the DESMA Center.
