Institutional Capacity Building for Village Government and Social Forestry Management to Develop Community-based Ecotourism

A project of Peatland Management and Rehabilitation—GIZ PROPEAT, has been implemented within the context of Indonesia – German Cooperation in reducing emission from forestry sector as well as improving livelihood of rural communities. The project aims to develop the planning and implementation capacities to rehabilitate peat ecosystem and mangrove forest in Kayan Sembakung Delta. The project combines policy and capacity development measures in which the activities are implemented at the macro, meso and micro levels.
GIZ PROPEAT has a program to strengthen the capacity of village governments and village forest managers in an effort to support sustainable peat and mangrove management. The strengthening activities of the village government and social forestry management are inline with the annual plan of GIZ PROPEAT. As a form of conservation of utilization and environmental protection through sustainable Ecotourism management, the GIZ PROPEAT pilot sites of Atap and Setabu Villages, Nunukan District, Kalimantan Utara, intend to develop village ecotourism that aims to provide benefits for the welfare of the village concerned and increase the income of the village and the existing community.
Within this framework, GIZ PROPEAT, together with DESMA Center are conducting series of activities which include (1) to carry out feasibility study of Community based ecotourism in Atap and Setabu Villages Kabupaten Nunukan, Kalimantan Utara; (2) to develop Community based Ecotourism Master Plan in selected pilot villages in Kabupaten Nunukan, Kalimantan Utara and (3) facilitating and implementing an integrated concept and practices of Sustainable Village Ecotourism development together with Pokdarwis and Village Officials in Atap and Setabu Villages, Kabupaten Nunukan, Kalimantan Utara.
